Shang Dynasty-
The Shang dynasty lasted from about 1700 BCE to 1100 BCE. During the Shang time family was important. The oldest male in the family was always in charge of the household. Today, the oldest male is usually who we call the dad. Children are expected today to respect their parents, and the same rules apply all the way back then. The poor in this dynasty live in scattered villages. They worked as farmers, and life for then was no where near as good as the rich. Their clothes were very simple, and there houses usually had no furniture. Unlike most ancient times the Shang dynasty had a middle class which consisted of craftsmen and merchants. These people were treated very unfairly. They lived in small mud huts right outside the city walls, which is better considering the peasant farmers lived no where near the city walls. The middle class citizens were paid, but only in food. Nobleman's, priests, and the emperor and his family lived inside the city walls. These were the first class people. Their homes were much different from the middle class and lowest class homes. These homes were made of clay or wood bricks, and they weren’t just homes but palaces. These palaces were decorated with exquisite painted tiles. Also, the clothes of the rich were made out of silk. Sadly, for the poor you were put in the social class that your father was in.
